Y3A Cafe

09

The refurbishment of a former hospitality space in the Arts Faculty Building is both a café and a practical catering facility for the adjacent Macquarie University Incubator.

A subtle response to the design language of the multi-award-winning Incubator, timber is a key material in the refurbishment, which was conceived as a peaceful teahouse nestled within a canopy of eucalyptus trees. Timber joinery adds light and tonal interest to the existing concrete floors, pillars and ceilings, while generous windows frame views of the leafy campus.

The refurbishment was fast realised; the concept was developed between January and March 2017 and the project delivered in July that year. In this short timeframe, the design team contended with a detailed brief that encompassed:

  • reactivating a dynamic new zone within the building
  • creating cohesive connections between internal and external spaces
  • responding to the design language of the adjacent Incubator
  • demolishing old kitchen services and providing new services in compliance with AS 4674-2004
  • improving internal acoustics.
